South Dakota Ballet founder, Madeleine Scott, was selected from a competitive pool of applicants to attend SOCAP19 in San Francisco for one week as a 2019 Bush Foundation Scholar. She was 1 of 3 South Dakota residents chosen for this opportunity.
What is SOCAP?
"SOCAP (Social Capital Markets) is in the vanguard of the emerging global impact economy — convening ideas and capital to catalyze world change. We are a network of investors, entrepreneurs, and social impact leaders addressing the world’s toughest challenges through market-based solutions. For more than ten years, we have achieved our goals through a series of events, initiatives, and partnerships that leverage the power and effectiveness of collaboration." Madeleine describes her experience:
"It was truly an honor to have been selected by the Bush Foundation to attend this event. I cannot thank them enough for providing me with this opportunity and supporting me on this endeavor as I build South Dakota's first professional ballet company.
SOCAP19 was an experience unlike anything I had ever had before. One moment, I would be discussing possibilities with an impact investor who manages an international foundation and the next I would be having lunch with an entrepreneur who has dedicated their life to regenerative agriculture and sustainability.
My experience, led me to ask bigger questions of myself, of my organization and of my industry as a whole. I look forward to applying my new knowledge as a female entrepreneur, leader, activist, mentor and artist. I am excited to explore innovative alternatives to the systemic & cultural norms that are deeply rooted in the ballet industry, yet no longer serve it.
It was a very colorful experience during which I was introduced to some of the world's most impactful people, conversations and networks. I couldn't have dreamed of a week more rich in diversity, innovation and inspiration. The future is bright."
